The Battle of Longewala was the only battle of its kind between Pakistani armour and Indian forces in which the Indian Air Force alone engaged the advancing Pakistani ground forces. Apart from a lone infantry company deployed at Longewala, there were no other Indian troops in the sector. The battle owed its success to the brilliant leadership of Air Marshal M. S. Bawa and the courage and skill of the pilots of No. 122 Squadron.
