During the Battle of Dograi, Brigadier (then Lieutenant Colonel) Desmond Hayde, Commanding Officer of 3 JAT, displayed exceptional courage and leadership. Leading a swift assault in the early hours of 6 September 1965, he drove his battalion through heavily fortified Pakistani defences, inflicting significant losses and advancing to capture Dograi by midday. Despite sustained enemy air and ground attacks, his troops held their positions until ordered to withdraw. For his outstanding gallantry and battlefield leadership, Hayde was awarded the Mahavir Chakra.
